CD Review: Heavy Glow Lets Out A "Midnight Moan"

The San Diego trio known as Heavy Glow are releasing a new album entitled "Midnight Moan". The band's last two EPs received rave reviews and a couple of the songs have been used on Fox television and on Classic Rock Magazine's sampler. Their 2010 album "The Filth & Fury" was nominated for "Best Rock Album of the Year" at the 2010 San Diego Music Awards.

Heavy Glow keep the power and energy from their past releases while featuring a more mature heavy classic rock sound. The lead song "Lose My Mind" seems to en-capture the band's sound from 70s rock icons like Foghat and Black Sabbath which carries over into the deep, dark "Slave Dance". The combination of Joe Brooks on bass and Dan Kurtz on drums gives a moodiness to the songs with Jared Mullins on guitar guiding the way. The song "All My Money" combines a southern rock vibe with the natural heaviness of the band's sound. Mullins' vocals on "Collide" sound like Axl Rose, while the slight distortion on "Purgatory Blues" sets the tone for this heavy blues romp. The acoustic "Smithereen" shows a softer side to the band before closing with the powerful rhythm of the 7-plus minute "Diggin' A Ditch".
