CD Review: Scum Of The Earth Releases "The Devil" In August

Former Rob Zombie guitarist, Mike Riggs started his new band Scum Of The Earth in 2003 and released their much anticipated debut album “Blah…Blah…Blah…Love Songs For The New Millennium” in 2004. Their follow up album “Sleaze Freak” received rave reviews and was heard all throughout the video game community, while a number of songs off the album also found their way onto movie and TV soundtracks.

Now, after a five-year hiatus, Scum Of The Earth returns with “The Devil Made Me Do It” due August 28 on Goomba Music. Riggs, along with bassist Brandon Workman and new comers Eddie Travis and Nick Mason, have taken what they learned from Rob Zombie and added their own experiences to create this attention-grabbing, industrial rock sound.

The new album begins with the crash of keyboard and guitars, surrounded by a pulsating beat on “Born Again Masochist” as Riggs' vocals sound more and more like Rob Zombie’s. The club type beats gets overshadowed by the scream of guitars and the shout out loud chorus of “Zombies vs. Skeletons.” The album’s first single, “The Devil Made Me Do It 3” sounds like it’s up for a remix as metal music and club beats combine to make an up-tempo, head-banging song that you can also dance to. The band slows down the assault on “Sounds Of The Dead,” but quickly returns to the electronic beats of “Pray.” The album closes with the clash of fuzzed out guitars and squealing keyboards on the mostly instrumental, “Funeral March.”
