Singer, songwriter, guitarist Marcus Singletary has become
very nostalgic recently. Earlier this year he released the guitar solo
compilation “Holy Guitar!” and now he is releasing a sixteen-song anthology
entitled “Satan’s Spawn.” This album was assembled from demos, outtakes and
songs from some of his past albums.
The album runs in a sort of chronological order, beginning with
some very early recordings done on cassettes. The sound is a bit ruff at times,
but they do show some potential in Marcus’ songwriting ability at a young age.
It’s not until about halfway through the album that you get to hear the
fullness of Marcus’s talents as in “Chicago Stomp” and “Shame.” This
compilation anthology ends strong with the funk sounds of “Start Something” and
“Get The Dance Gene” before closing with the nine-minute guitar solo “Occupy.”
