CD Review: "Mystery Girl" Celebrates 25 Years Since Roy Orbison's Final Masterpiece

One of the all-time golden voices of rock 'n' roll belonged to the immortal Roy Orbison. With a musical career that lasted 35 years, Roy Orbison sang with everyone from Elvis Presley and Johnny Cash to Bruce Springsteen and Bono. One of his all-time greatest albums, unfortunately was his last. The album, "Mystery Girl" became a surprise hit in 1989, hitting the top 5 on the Billboard Album chart and selling over one million copies in the U.S. only. The album was out-of-print on CD for a least ten years, until Legacy Records released a 25th anniversary edition of the album on May 19th.

The original ten song album was remastered for this new release and is accompanied by nine bonus songs from the original recording sessions. The star studded album includes help from Tom Petty, George Harrison, Jeff Lynne, Bono, T-Bone Burnett and load more. The album's lead single, "You Got It" was a "top 10" hit and was nominated for a Grammy award. The sound on this new remastered version makes Roy's voice sound exquisite, especially on the ballads "A Love So Beautiful" and "Windsurfer." The bonus songs feature eight rough working demos of songs featured on the album. The highlight is a new recording of the song "The Way Of Love," which features Roy's original guide vocals supported by his sons Wesley, Roy Jr. and Alex and produced by Johnny Cash's song John Carter Cash.

Along with this new CD come a bonus DVD featuring the hour-long documentary "Mystery Girl: Unraveled." The documentary features new interviews with Tom Petty, Jeff Lynne, Jim Keltner, Bono, Steve Cropper, Mike Campbell and more as they describe how great it was to work with the one and only Roy Orbison. It also features footage of Roy in the studio performing the vocals to many of the songs on the album, even including his help on Tom Petty's "Full Moon Fever" album. Also included on the DVD are eight music videos, including for the first time a video for the newly created song "The Way Of Love."
