Mike Watt
is an American singer/bass player, best known as a member of the
bands Minutemen, Firehose and the Stooges. In 1995 he released his first solo
album titled "Ball-Hog or Tugboat?" The album included the addition of
some pretty famous friends including Dave Grohl, Eddie Vedder, Flea,
Henry Rollins and Krist Novoselic just to name a few. Later that year, Mike Watt brought
his new album out on the road to test his new material in front of an
audience and the response was overwhelming.
In honor of the 20th anniversary of Mike Watt's album "Ball-Hog Or Tugboat?," Columbia/Sony Legacy is releasing "Ring Speil Tour '95" on November 11th. It features a show recorded during Watt's 1995 tour stop at the Metro club in Chicago. The show features Watt on bass and vocals along with Dave Grohl on drums and guitar, Eddie Vedder on guitar and vocals with special guests Pat Smear on guitar and William Goldsmith on drums.
The new sixteen song release begins with a couple cover songs, "Walking The Cow" and "Big Train," before Vedder jumps up to help Watt on the vocals during "Against The '70s." Mike Watt takes on the early Vedder's own composition "Habit," giving the song it's raw, punk-like due, before Watt and the band get funky with the original "Makin' The Freeway." Watt dedicates "Piss-Bottle Man" to his dad as the energy of the song is through the roof. He brings out the classic Seattle grunge sound of "Political Song For Michael Jackson To Sing," before tackling a couple more covers, including Blue Oyster Cult's "The Red And The Black" and Madonna's "Secret Garden." The show finishes with just Mike Watt and his bass performing "Powerful Hankerin'" to the delight of the audience.
