CD/DVD Review: Musicians Pay Tribute To Dr. John And His "Musical Mojo"

Musician/singer/songwriter Dr. John is a living legend. He has won six Grammy awards, nominated for another six and has been inducted into the Rock & Roll and Blues Hall of Fame. In May of 2014, Dr. John along with a few dozen of his friends got together to perform a live tribute to the New Orleans legend. Artists ranging from Bruce Springsteen to Allen Toussaint to Ryan Bingham step in to duet with Dr. John on some of his most famous songs.

A 2CD/Blu-ray or DVD set will be released on October 21st through the Concord Music Group and features the entire 22 performance, 2 hour show. The night started off with Bruce Springsteen joining Dr. John for one of his most famous, well-known songs "Right Place, Wrong Time" as Dr. John brings out the funk. Jason Isbell adds a country flair to "Blow Wind Blow," before fellow New Orleans legends the Neville family help out on "My Indian Red" and "Please Send Me Someone To Love." Dave Malone joins Dr. John for the jazzed up version of "Goodnight Irene," then Big Chief Monk Boudreaux closes out the first half of the show with "Big Chief."

The second half begins with Widespread Panic and the Dirty Dozen Brass Band joining forces on "Familiar Realty" and then Warren Haynes works his blues guitar into "You Lie." Mavis Staples calls for the gospel of "Lay My Burden Down," which has New Orleans flavor drizzled all over it. The show closes with Dr. John and Sarah Marrow harmonizing on the tunes "I Walk On Gilded Splinters" and "Such A Night" as Dr. John thanks all for this timeless honor.
