On
November 18th, Purple Pyramid unleashed a six-CD box set titled "Space
Rock: An Interstellar Traveler's Guide." It features over seven hours of
trippy, psychedelic, progressive rock that pushes the boundaries of
what is defined as rock music.
The set
feature songs from well-known artists like Nik Turner ("Out Of Control")
and Steve Hillage with William Shatner ("Rocket Man") matched up
against space rock adventures from Faust ("Parasiten") and Guru Freakout
("Notre Dame (Mothership)"). Some of the best inclusions in this set
are live songs from Gong, Aqua Nebula Oscillator, Gilli Smyth and Alice
Cooper. Songs like "L" from Dark Buddha Rising, "Deep Temple" by Sun
Araw and "Meals Of Confusion" by Electric Orange push well-beyond the
ten-minute mark, which allows the songs to build up it's intense payoff.
I am most surprised that their are over 70 different bands included on
this new compilation. They all have the same idea for creating the most
unique, boundary pushing music out there and most bands have not been
discovered by fans of this type of music. The set closes with a
ten-minute interview with Nik Turner from 1975 following the release of
the new Hawkwind album "Hall Of The Mountain Grill."
This is a
great release that allows listeners to experience and connect with many
different bands that carry the same torch for space rock music. All six discs are housed in their own individual, specially designed jacket and the set also includes an oversized booklet with new liner notes from music journalist Dave Thompson. To find
