CD Review: Dualtone Records Gathers The Best Of Guy Clark For New Compilation

Texas singer/songwriter Guy Clark led a successful 40 year career in music before passing away in May 2016. He has had numerous albums featured on the country album charts, with his 2013 album "My Favorite Picture Of You" reaching #12. In March 2017, Dualtone will release a brand new 19-song, 2CD compilation titled "The Best Of The Dualtone Years" from Guy Clark. It covers his three most recent studio albums and one live release, which has revived Clark's musical legacy.

The new two-disc set begins with the acoustic strumming of "Rain In Durango" off his last studio album as his weathered voice gives the storied lyrics some authenticity. The addition of the live tracks "The Cape," "L.A. Freeway" and "The Randall Knife" on the first disc showcase how Clark's popularity had blossomed among the younger generation. One of the only cover songs to appear on this compilation is Clark's version of Townes Van Zandt's "If I Needed You" as Clark delivers the tune with such grace and pride for his fellow songwriter.

The second disc begins with the wonderful, gentle, warm tones of "Magdalene" and the playful lyrics of "Homegrown Tomatoes" performed live. After the fan favorite "Dublin Blues," this new compilation features three unreleased demos. The first is a short acoustic tale "Just To Watch Maria Dance" and both "The Last Hobo" and "Time" feature Marty Stuart on these two final recordings from Guy Clark.
