There are some bands that have simply been called inspirational for what they have offered the music industry, then there is Big Star. This rock band from the early seventies have done and meant more than just a simple inspiration to some of the biggest bands in alternative music. Following the death of Big Star's Alex Chilton in 2010, bands like R.E.M. and Wilco have paid tributes to the band that inspired them.
On April 21st, Concord Bicycle Music will release a brand new 2CD/DVD or Blu-ray set titled "Thank You Friends: Big Star's Third Live...And More." It features a 90-minute concert that celebrates the music of Big Star, performed by members of R.E.M., Wilco, Yo La Tango, Semisonic, the dB's and members of Big Star. The night focuses on Big Star's third studio album simply titled "Third," which as been called one of the most influential albums of all time.
The concert took place in April of 2016 and starts off with the beautiful acoustic strumming of Pat Sansone and Brett Harris on "Watch The Sunrise." R.E.M's Mike Mills sings "September Gurls" as if he was auditioning to be in the band as he delivers a flawless rendition. Harris and Mills join forces for the popular "In The Street" as they harmonize wonderfully together. Wilco's Jeff Tweedy comes out to inject some energy on the guitar driven rocker "When My Baby's Beside Me" and Ken Stringfellow delivers the goods on "Feel." Dan Wilson takes center stage for the heartfelt sing-along of "The Ballad Of El Goodo," before Tweedy returns for the quiet acoustics of "Nightime." The show wraps up with an appearance of Robyn Hitchcock, who recreates the experimental sounds of "Downs," before being seduced by the beautiful vocals of Skylar Gudasz on "Dream Lover." Then the whole cast comes out for the sing-along finale "Thank You, Friends."
