On February 5th, one day before what would have been Bob Marley's 76th birthday, UMe in association with Tuff Gong is releasing the new "Songs Of Freedom: The Island Years" six-vinyl and 3CD box set. This set will available for the first time on vinyl in the U.S. and the first time anywhere in nearly 30 years, on black vinyl and also on limited edition colored vinyl. The new revised version of this set includes only 47 of the 78 tracks that appeared on the original 1992 release, but delivers the perfect timeline from the early days of Bob Marley and The Wailers' music through to their worldwide domination.
As soon as you drop the needle, the first thing you will notice is how great of a balance there is to the music on the opening track "High Tide Or Low Tide." The vinyl is quiet with no pops or ticks, the bass is deep and full, especially on early songs like "Concrete Jungle" and "Natty Dread," while also maintaining a clarity to the vocals. The set mixes in live versions of classics like "I Shot The Sheriff" and "No Woman No Cry," along with rare 12" mixes of "Jamming" and "Exodus."
This set delivers the many sides of Bob Marley's music, with political songs like "War," "Zimbabwe" and "Africa Unite," along with spiritual redemption in key songs like "Forever Loving Jah" and "Give Thanks And Praises." His music oozed with positive vibrations as you can't help but crank up the volume on the 12" mix of "One Love/People Get Ready," which sounds stunning on vinyl.
It is also really nice having rarities like "One Dub" and the London version of "Keep On Moving" available on this vinyl version, gathered along side other iconic Bob Marley anthems. A full-color 20-page booklet (96-page booklet with the 3CD set) includes write-ups from Bob's wife Rita Marley, as well as Billboard Magazine Editor-In-Chief Timothy White, Island Records Director of Press Rob Partridge and musician John Bundrick. Plus, rare photos and track by track information make this a complete, must have set for any Bob Marley fan.
